Clarkstown is one of five towns located in Rockland County, New York. It is home to over twenty communities, including the county seat, New City. The town of Clarkstown is about a 30 minute drive away from New York City.
According to the United States Census Bureau, as of 2000 Clarkstown has a population of more than 80,500 residents. The town has a total area of 46.9 square miles with 8.4 square miles of water. Clarkstown has several lakes; Lake Deforest, Congers Lake and Rockland Lake, and is bordered by the Hudson River on the east side. The town is located at a slight elevation of over 100 feet above sea level.
The racial demographics of Clarkstown are 79.97% White, 7.87% African American, 0.13% Native American, 7.90% Asian, 0.10% Pacific Islander, 1.99% from other races, and 2.03% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race make up 6.92% of the population.
Clarkstown has more than 27,500 households, many of which are affluent. The median income for a household in the village is $84,761, and the median income for a family is $98,309.
The town of Clarkstown is served by the Clarkstown Central School District, which has two high schools. The town is also home to Albertus Magnus High School, a private coeducational Catholic school.
Clarkstown is home to several parks and recreational facilities. Major Public parks include Nyack Beach State Park and Rockland Lake State Park. Private clubs include Delwood Country Club, West Rock Tennis Club and West Nyack Tennis & Swim Club. Other public parks such as Germond’s Park and Zukor Park provide a variety of sports fields.
Clarkstown is home to the Palisades Center, one of the biggest malls in the tri-state area and in the nation.
